The H. J. Heinz Company records primarily document H. J. Heinz product development, advertising and related public relations activities. The records include photographs, advertisements, advertising lay-outs, business ledgers, company publications, and salesman's manuals. The first series, Photoprints, date between 1870 and 1935 and illustrate both company operations and H. J. Heinz's personal life. The second series, Advertising Layouts, date between 1905 and 1935. They consist of overpainted photoprints and original art work in ink, gauche, and paint, and sample texts. The third series, H. J. Heinz Advertisements, contain advertisements in their finished form, primarily street car advertisements and magazine tear sheets. The fourth series, H. J. Heinz Company and Personal Papers contains a variety of materials which provide information about company operations and Heinz family interests from 1874 to 1969. Included are sales training materials, employee information and product shipping records. The fifth series, Company Printed Materials, is comprised of printed materials including memorials and tributes, programs for company and community events, and company publications. The sixth series, Company Albums and Scrapbooks, document company operations, advertising strategies, employee recognition activities and the company's World War II production efforts. The seventh series, Company Business Ledgers dating from 1876 to 1940 include account books, building records, sales conventions records, stock inventories and a travelers register.

Henry John Heinz, a pioneer in the food processing industry, established Heinz, Noble & Co. in 1869 with partner L. Clarence Noble to make and sell processed foods. Horseradish was the company's first product of a quickly expanding line. Financial difficulties forced company bankruptcy in 1875.
